I did not want to sidetrack the “Trump in India” thread, so I started this thread to highlight a musical style that many might not have been exposed to. There are some stunning musicians in India.
First, a little background: There are two distinct traditions in Indian classical music. What we usually think of when we hear the term Indian music, the sitar/tabla/tanpura combo, comes from northern India and is called Hindustani music. The music from the south is called Carnatic music and is a bit more varied in both instrumentation and structure. Those who cut their teeth on the Carnatic tradition are naturals at Jazz.
First, a relatively traditional Carnatic fiddle duo (the music starts at :55)
Now, Carnatic Fusion. The instrument is called a Veena. (the music doesn’t start until 2:45)
And because this video includes Mohini Dey and Abhijith P S Nair, two absolutely outstanding musicians

Ironic beyond belief, that anyone from India would have the same name as a hair removing product...............[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 02-24-2020).]
