Overthinking it? NFL's SF 49ers radio man hit with one game suspension, after remark. (Page 1/1)

San Francisco 49ers radio announcer Tim Ryan suspended over 'dark skin' comment about Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.

Here's part of the report.

quote
“He’s really good at that fake [handoff], Lamar Jackson, but when you consider his dark skin color with a dark football with a dark uniform, you could not see that thing,” Ryan said on San Francisco radio station KNBR’s “Murph & Mac Show" on Monday.

“I mean, you literally could not see when he was in and out of the mesh point and if you’re a half step slow on him in terms of your vision, forget about it, he’s out of the gate," Ryan continued about Sunday's game in which the Ravens beat the 49ers, 20-17.

Jackson rushed for 101 yards in the game and so far this season has rushed for 977 yards. He is close to beating the NFL single-season rushing record by a quarterback, now held by Michael Vick, who ran for 1,039 yards in 2006.

I guess I've heard worse. Maybe Lamar Jackson and other dark-skinned quarterbacks should be required to wear Caucasian-toned sleeves down to their wrists--or gloves? Of course, that could be looked at another way. Maybe quarterbacks with lighter skin tones could have the option ... oh wait. What about the footballs? Racially diverse football inventories for NFL games? How about an electronically augmented football that changes its color like a chameleon, depending upon ..?

It calls to mind some lyrics from an old TV series that had a memorable theme song.

quote
Ah, be careful what you say
Or you'll give yourself away
Odds are you won't live to see tomorrow
