Yep, I just met a man here in Hattiesburg that told me he had one and it's still in the crate it was shipped to him in. Haven't seen it but asked if he would allow me to. He told me that I was welcome to come over and look at the crate but, he wasn't going to uncrate or open it. Said it was being left for his son.

Having heard that, I won't bother going over to look at a wooden crate but, assembling it and getting it running would be a fun project.

I read of these stories in the past. (Always a car guy.) There may be a lot of BS to the truths. Rereading the article and following the rabbit hole a bit tends to let me think that these are closer to chicken's teeth now. The pic is a reproduction unit made for show. No "new" units have been found in 35 years plus. I want one badly.

Edit: Going over to look at a wooden crate may be a thing of history?

Who remembers these ads?

Every boy in the '50s and '60s dreamed of buying a cheap surplus jeep. (and some X-ray glasses)

This guy claims to have the story: The $50 Jeep In A Crate Urban Legend

quote

"Cheap Army Surplus Jeeps! You can buy a brand new jeep in a crate for $50!" Ads with headlines like this ran for decades in the back of Boy's Life, Popular Mechanics, and several other magazines I used to read as a kid in the 1960's (and those ads probably ran in the 1940's and 1950's as well). The ads promised to tell you how to buy Willys MB and Ford GPW jeeps and other government surplus for extremely low prices. They charged a fee for sending you this information. You mailed in your payment and waited for the postman to deliver the pamphlet that would divulge the secrets of buying tools, equipment, jeeps, trucks, etc. etc. on the cheap for "your fun and profit".

For decades, Col Bubbies Surplus in downtown Galveston Tx was iconic. A huge building, and full of real surplus items and not just military goods. I remember going there in the late 50s/very early 60s with my father and watching him opening crates. One was stuffed full of straw, to cushion dozens of Panama hats. He bought one for $2. He also bought a HUGE military surplus heavy canvas mess tent.
That place finally closed down a few years ago.

You get what you pay for. Growing up there was this one guy, the Jeep guy.
He got a jeep in a box shipped and only paid a couple $100 for it.
When it got there it was a box, full of jeep parts but it wasn't enough or the correct parts for one jeep.
He did get some great condition old parts but that's all just a box of parts.

No he wasn't the most reliable person so the story is probably closer to he ordered a box of parts but that was a boring story.

Personally I would rather have a box full of parts from Factory 5 if you haven't had a chance to get me something for Christmas yet
