Prepping tips? (Page 1/7)

Recently saw some videos on like prepping for disasters, and i hope you guys dont mind me asking you all this, but what are some like, general guidelines for food and water you would recommend? like bare minimum for survival, enough to help out some close friends of my family etc. I know i may sound wierd coming from a 17 year old, but it seems like something i should know in case something bad happens, because as the line goes, "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst"

From what I've heard FEMA recommends enough for 1 week. But that would be if they could get their act together and get emergency centers set up within that time. I would say stock up as much as your comfortable with. Remember how long it took them to react to Katrina, and they knew that was coming ahead of time.

I keep my motorhome packed with clothes, food (canned and unperishables) and water full time. Also batteries charged (plugged in) and full of gas and propane. It has plenty of water, even in the fridge, guns and ammo. Its all self contained with generator and radios/tvs/CB, walkies, and I have tools, flashlights, and plenty of batteries I can be heading out of Dodge in a matter of minutes and heading to the backwoods. I literally just need to grab my cat, laptop, cellphones and a few other things and Im out the door. Im on the edge of town and 3 minutes from the Interstate, so I can be going down the highway before most people could get in their cars. I even planned ahead and bought solar panels to charge batteries and stuff (roof collector and hose to tank, and a portable 12v pump to load up riverwater)) to collect clean rainwater when the on board water would run out. I could live in it right now full time for years if needed.

Enough ammo and training to take your neighbors food.

EDIT: For those that missed it, this was an attempt at humor.

That is my biggest problem in an 'event'. We have 5 cats, 3 dogs, and a bird to deal with. ( one of the reasons my next "car" is a blazer . just start tossing carriers full of fur in the back and zoooom we are off )

My situation is a little different.

First off, In a SHTF (S@@# Hit The Fan) or WROL (Without Rule Of Law) situation I believe people you would have trusted the day before will shoot you to get any supplies they think you may have. (see post above about having enough ammo to take neighbors food)

So, Rule #1 is to never tell people what you have, be it food, water, weapons, money etc.

That said.

I drive a truck, and my "stash" is moving around the country all the time. I think I'm safe on this part.

I keep enough supplies to last at least a week before I am starting to hurt. On top of the case of bottled water I keep on hand, I have the water filter that I am going to use for my hike (that I'm still doing) I have a few MRE's on hand, with the intention of stretching them out as long as possible. I have a few mylar (I think that's what they are) emergency blankets), and then I have the various medicines. Anti-Diarrhea, Anti-Nausea, Tylenol, Aspirin, some Antibiotics, and some other medicines. These are emergency use only, and not opened because I have a headache, or other problem that I can stop and get what I need at a store. A few lighters, multi-tool a P38 can opener, fire stick, and rubbing alcohol. I also decided to carry the small tools to make a pop can stove because it's simple to make as needed, and would get crushed in the kit. (Plus the MRE's will be eaten cold, with the heater saved for "other" uses.)

My Bug out bag is just to hopefully get me to a safe location, and headed toward home, where hopefully the wife won't shoot me before I can identify myself.

What I would recommend for a home kit would cover the basics. Go by the rule of 3's

quote
In any extreme situation you cannot survive for more than:
  • 3 minutes without air
  • 3 hours without shelter
  • 3 days without water
  • 3 weeks without food.

So you set it up by importance;

  • Air: This could be a simple face mask, gas mask etc.
  • Shelter: I have some emergency blankets which I can make into a temporary shelter.
  • Water: I have bottled water, and a filter.
  • Food: MRE's are good, as are freeze dried foods.

I live in a very rural area for a reason. Plenty of fish and game. Good fertile soil. Deep well.

Flat level open ground so I can see them coming by day and a couple of dogs for warning by night. Plus they're backup food storage ( but don't tell them that ).

I am a seasonal prepare... I prep for hurricanes. Each spring I start by stocking up on water, and by the time the season is here, I have approx 24 cases of water. I also stock up on nonperishable foods such as Tuna, Vienna sausages, potted meat, spam, ramen noodles, and other canned veggies and fruits. I keep charcoal in the garage for the BBQ grill to cook meats in the freezer on the grill outside. I had my home wired for a generator several years ago, so when power is out, my home still has power. I also stock up on gasoline and by the time the season is here I have approx 50 gallons of gas in storage. I also keep my garaged cars (Fiero; and this year the Vette) that are not daily driven full of gas in case my storage supply runs low, I can siphon gas out of the 2 cars that are not daily driven.

As soon as the season is over, we start using some of the stocked supplies. The water typically last thru the fall and over the winter, and there are typically about 6 cases left over. I put the gas in my cars, and lawn equipment to make sure it doesn't go bad, and we start using the canned goods as well. That way we keep fresher supplies for the next year.

We do have a bug out plan. When we have a hurricane warning, my wife leaves for Michigan immediately. As long as the hurricane is 3 or less, I hunker down. 3 or more, I leave as well if able.

When Hugo hit, there were a lot of lessons learned, and I hope to prepared for the next big one.

depends on what you are prepping for....

Here, winter can be an issue, so I have food on hand for a week or two. Otherwise, there really isn't a need to store a ton of stuff and frankly, if I had to bug out, I am already in a location that people would go

Hunting, fishing, neighbors, etc.... Plus the joke of my area is that we are 20 years behind, so if anything happens, we won't know for an additional 20 years!
