3800 electrical questions (Page 1/3)
longjonsilver MAR 29, 07:31 AM
i've started my 3800 swap.

Sorry for the bad lighting.

Anyway, a cuppla things.

1. Does the 2002 GTP alternator NEED the cooling water that goes into its housing? Or is air cooling alone sufficient?

2. The coils are mounted on a plastic board which is attached to a metal plate. Is that plate a ground or a heat sink? Therefore can i attach the coils anywhere i want? Like to the firewall?

3. How do guys route the electrical components so neatly that they can't be seen in pics? As you know the factory motors have loom everywhere. Ugly.

Most people move the alternator down below. They plug the water pump port and route the intake port to the heatercore. Depending on your year fiero your heatercore lines differ. You could plug them both but you'd need to modify your coolant fill.

You can attach them to the firewall. That's where I have mine, just make sure it's flush. Things to consider here are length of sparkplug wires and the ICM harness needs to reach. Just make sure it's grounded well.

Most people purchase there's from a select few guys who know the tricks. I don't think it'd be hard, just gotta take your time. For the price you really can't beat buying it though.

Have fun!

Just for clarity, the base of the coil pack is a heat sink. It usually comes with heat sink compound between it and the ICM. Best to keep the heat sink, although it can be mounted remotely ( I mounted mine where the battery sits ( front battery relocation).

i also have a front battery, so i probably will mount them in the old battery spot, but i want to verify that they are good, and so i have to remove them from the heat sink. However only 5 of the six bolts came loose, altho i soaked them in penetrating oil for 24 hours. Soaking the last bolt again. Tuff deal, 5mm is too small, 3/16 is too small, 1/4" is too big, and 5.5mm worked for the others but slipped on the last bolt.
Anybody know what size?

What does the ICM stand for - injection control module?

ICM means ignition control module, since it's controlling the ignition coils that sit on top of it.

This is what I did. About halfway down page one. http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/089035.html

This is the EGR no? i notice some people delete it, others keep it. What are the considerations that i should make about the EGR on my swap?

What other electronic components/sensors are usually left off a 3800 swap? There are no smog tests to pass here, and no cat is required for a Fiero - only 1990 and later must have a cat.

(if i had a 1990 Fiero, i would gladly keep the cat )

More questions. Can anyone help me?

Is the green circle the cam position sensor? And is the red circle the crank position sensor?

Thanks

Yes.
It's the small wiring harness that goes to the main harness and then to the Ignition Control Module (ICM), along with some wires from the Power Control Module (PCM).
I'm sure other 3800 experts will chime in if needed.

Merçi infiniment Rafé, c'est bien gentil de vous.

Where is the PCM? What does it look like?

thanks in advance
