3800sc swap, very strange thing happening (Page 1/2)

2000 series 2 3800SC into 86 GT. car would start and run fairly decent, then, it started to make a "Scraping noise" ONLY when put in DRIVE, Not in reverse or park, neutral (standing still ). noise stopped as soon as out of drive. I looked for a belt or pulley touching something when put in drive, NOTHING.took belts off and checked all pullys. then today all of a sudden starts running rough and died.(In Park) would not restart without the throttle at least half OPEN. (like it flooded). I just took out, checked and cleaned ALL the Injectors last week. OBD2 show "NO Codes". has new IAC. all vacuum lines hooked and no cracks. what could the NOISE and problem BE, ONLY IN DRIVE ?? I'm assuming both the " scraping/ sucking Noise" and the "seeming" Flooding are connected.
Any Ideas ?
really strange. thanks for any help

Good morning

Have you recently removed the throttle body? Any vacuum leaks around the gasket? I have had a similar sound in the past with air sucking past the TB when not sealed properly- and perhaps this would also explain the stalling...?? When you put it in Drive, the RPM drops, perhaps causing the stall due to vacuum problems?

Just a guess...

TB has Not been off. it only does it in drive, not reverse, nor neutral or park. which would also drop the rpm.

Does it happen the instant its in drive, or as soon as you release the brakes?
Lou6t4gto FEB 15, 10:07 PM
the instant it's in drive. doesn't need to be moving.

My E250 Ford van does that on cold mornings. Put it in drive and a heat shield under vehicle starts vibrating. Won't do it in reverse or neutral. Strange...
I've got to get under there and bend that heat shield into position away from what its rubbing against. Once warmed up it doesn't vibrate or rattle anymore.

My wife ran over a dead deer some years ago, in the middle of the night, with her Ford Fusion and at 1500 rpm a bent heat shield would vibrate. I bent it back into position with my bare hands. End of problem.

Dumb question but how does the trans fluid look?
Lou6t4gto FEB 18, 08:40 AM
will have to check. trans is brand new, not even 1 mile on it yet.

Pull the trans dust cover and check the heads of the torque converter bolts.
Clearances are very tight between bolt head and back of block.
