3800 swap temp gauge question (Page 1/1)

3800SC swapped into a 86 coupe. Everything works great Except the "Stock TEMP GAUGE" reads 200 degrees as soon as the key is turned to the ON position, goes to zero with key off, the engine is cold, not even started in a day. stock Gauge? , sender on the 3800? ecm ? thanks

I used the stock 3800 temp sender. It has three wires. One for the computer, one for the Fiero gauge and the other for...the feed voltage I think.

ECM has nothing to do with temp gage.

thats what it has, stock 3.8 sender w 3 wires. WHY is it reading 200 when it should not read anything with the engine Cold ?

I have seen the wiring "reversed" on the stock 3800 temp sender. I think, IIRC, that the wiring on the NA model is different from the Supercharged model. I remember looking at the wiring diagram and seeing that the colors went to different pins on the two models. See if you can track down a 3900 Factory service manual or wiring diagrams.

EDIT: My bad, I was thinking about the TPS wiring being different on the pin-outs between the Supercharged and NA models. Guess I am getting old!!

The green wire is the gage, there is no reversing on a single wire sensor.
All of the GM three wire temperature senders are wired the same.
I would suspect an bad sending unit or a bad gage.

tried 2 New" senders" (stock 1999 Grand prix) they both do the same thing, 200 degrees when the engine is COLD (key on, not running)

Check wiring circuit resistance between sender and gage.
Substitute a known good gage.

Get an ACdelco coolant sensor. It was made for that engine. Install it " W I T H O U T " teflon tape and call me in the morning.
