Trip odometer repair? (Page 1/1)
hercimer01 APR 16, 01:07 AM
I assume its broken and cant be fixed. It clicks and rattles so to me that means the stepper motor works but the gears don't? Are the 4 cyl and 6 cyl trip odometer the same?

I've swapped the trip meter from a 4 into a V6 cluster before. It worked and I didn't notice any difference other than the meter was working again.

A note to Fiero owners.....

The trip odometer is to be reset when the car is not moving.

Good Idea but Where does GM said this?

Good Idea because may take a few times to reset... Per GM TSB...

Resetting Trip Odometer Bulletin
Number:88-8-10 Reference Number:838201 Publish Date:2/88
Subject: RESETTING TRIP ODOMETER
Models Affected: 1987-88 FIERO
The recommended procedure for resetting the trip odometer is as follows:
"To reset the trip odometer, push in the trip odometer reset stem until all digits read zero. Then, press again so all zeros line up." If the stem is not pushed in a second time, the digits may not line up, which could result in the unnecessary replacement of the speedometer assembly.
Owners should be informed of this procedure if they have questions on odometer digit alignment.
This procedure will be included in the next edition of the owner's manual.

Says 87-88 but all are same and can act like has "striped gears" when the reset does not align the 0's.
Better luck to push Reset slowly 1 or 2 to align all 0's.

Plus a lot of crap gets in the dash and can cause same problem. Also a big reason why many complain dash lighting is dim. see http://www.fiero.nl/forum/F.../HTML/138175.html#p4 Can have several other problem making it dim too like See my Cave, Dash Dimmer

The information is presented in the Fiero owners manual.

Thanks, it acts like the gears are stripped. I guess I'll check the mall.

If it isn't properly reset, it will tick. Try resetting it as described. I agree with olejoedad. I've read in a Fiero book that it's best to be stopped when resetting. Probably because it's difficult to level out the zeros while the car is in motion.

I'm taking a long shot here and just guessing that this might be the correct part.
Found this on Ebay for ten bucks. He has 3 more.
I'll keep up dates on progress here.

No. Is from some other GM car.

Trip/odo works similar and motor that's 90° from number shaft but trip has more gears. exrta gears make digits diplay wider w/ window to view each.
CLICK FOR FULL SIZE

Again simple dirt can cause this because button doesn't full reset digits or itself after pressing.
Take speedo out and look at it and try "Can air" while pushing the button.
for trip... turn gear hit by tiny motor and watch.
Part you see is first release small gears to reset digits. Actual reset is reset arm hits a cam on each digit in back.

Don't turn odo gear. Very easy to mess up a working odo. Odo has "tamper proof" parts to "flag" common odo scams so any can see.
