86 2m4 duke alternator belt replacement (Page 1/1)

I have a generally excellent service manual for my daughter's 86 2m4 but it's one deficiency is that it overlooks some of the more obvious repair procedures, such as replacing the alternator belt. I drove the car last night and heard the dreaded belt squeak which, from having been stranded in Milwaukee last year, I know to be the prelude to breaking. Can anyone point me to a repair diagram that shows what needs to be removed to change the belt? I'm not interested in switching to a serpentine setup or anything like that. I just want to be able to change the belt myself every now and then and avoid the $125 shop charges.

Are you getting 1 year of service out of a belt? hmmmm. Did she drive through a puddle?

See my Cave, Serpent Belt
Most of it applies to V belts too.

belt not last is most problem(s) with stuff they drive or too tight or too loose.
plus many are missing wheel skirts then road crap contaminates the belt and pulleys.

I think I found the issue- the crank pulley is a 2-groove (AC?) with a larger diameter outer groove, smaller diameter inner groove. The line the belt wants to run from the water pump to the crank is right smack between the two grooves, which is obviously why it jumped. Am I correct that the misalignment can be fixed by swapping in the correct single-groove crank pulley?

Over the years there have been a lot of different pulleys on the iron duke, so it's not easy to get the 'correct' one....as some forum members have found out. Maybe the water pump pulley is in the wrong place.

Inner crank is WP and alt.
Outer crank is AC for cars w/ the option.
No AC cars doesn't change pulley setup for the rest.

WP pulley can be off center when WP is replaced. Any/all possible items:
Metal between block and WP can make WP move when that piece is removed.
WP pulley can be pressed in w/ alignment errors or use wrong pulley.
Gaskets or leak of them can alignment too.

crank pulley might be off when people remove/replace timing gears or oil seal and get the job wrong but is harder to have this.
Might have change pulley itself and is wrong pulley.

Blasted belt broke last night- fortunately not far from home, but I had to drive 1/2 mile with the temp gauge pegged! So I know what I'll be doing this weekend.
