sbc no oil pressure (Page 1/1)

FIrst off i have no hands on this yet. Typing this to get some other ideas as i go into help. New built motor a 62 sbc 327. has a remotoe oil filter. Spinning drive rod on a drill can not get any oil pressure to come up. Any thing beside a pump being bad out of the box anyone can think of.

Is this a brand new rebuild that has never been installed, or made oil pressure yet?

Or is it something that lost oil pressure?

No real experience with gen 1 sbc, but there are a few oil galleries that need plugged.

Brand new and won't build pressure.

Fully in a car or on a stand?
I am not sure if they can produce a pump that would not move some oil short of leaving a key piece out like one of the rotors (correct term?)

When you can get your hands to it, first thing I would do is pull the dipstick and make sure oil is in it. Might offend someone, but start with the basics.

Next I would look into how they are driving it with the drill. It is not a Ford, so a hex drive does not work. Chevy uses a slot in the pump shaft, then a flat in the distributor to drive it. I use an old distributor with the drive gear removed for priming.

If that checks out- if oil is being drawn in to the pump, there will be some load on the drill. If there is no noticable load, then the problem is probably at the pump or south of it with aomething incorrect with the pickup.

If the drill is loading down, I would pull a valve cover and see if any oil is making it up into the head.

If oil seems to be making it up to the head, I would turn my attention to the oil pressure guage. Make sure it is hooked up, and in the correct spot. If unsure of the guage, go to an auto parts store and buy a cheapy. I keep an extra one in my tool box.

Should be a good start to diagnosis

I don't know wtf is going on with this engine. looking like they may need to do an entire tear down. ran drill got nothing not even talking gauge. He has a clear tube on it so we can see oil. got nothing. Took pump off and pan. put pump in oil in a bucket. well the pickup like it would be in the pan spun it got oil out of the pump. ok measure pickup distance from block and pan depth pickup is about a 1/4 inch off bottom of pan its withing spec. while i was checking this he put some air to his line and blew back down to see if his line was clogged. well something blew out of the gallery. no clue what it was but there was something. He is gonna try to reprime. well i hope reprime he kept saying ill just crank it over and see if it builds. hes close to if not already did wiping the bearings he keeps cranking when there's no pressure. In therory it should be working. only think i can thing is there something in one of the galleries that is keeping it from building. or maybe what ever he blew out was the issue.

Cool. Hopefully he didn't do to much damage to it
